  • Your five biggest feature requests...

Write here all the features you would like to see in the Tabbles! We'll do our best to implement them all in no time! :-)

Hello Veronique and welcome here! :D

Thanks for your suggestions! I'm posting here the graphics that we got from the design who designed part of the Tabbles GUI.

On the top part you can see the tabble shapes that he designed for us: we have on our to-do list to implement them but it won't be before at least a couple of months (the shared-tabbles have the highest priority...)

    Enjoy:

Very nice, Andrea! Actually had that on my wish list too, but you guys been quite busy and a low priority for me as well.

Veronique, I'm not sure I quite understand what you're saying there. Is that referring to a color that has no Tabbles attached still showing when you group by color name?

    1) QUICK OPENING of tabbles without need to open main window
    - throught search panel launched by hotkey (like "LAUNCHY" app)
    - or throught autohiding side-bar

    2) SEARCH in file panel
It should be better if program Tabbles were filtering and reducing number of combinable tabbles on the right side of file panel according to text typed in search bar (in order to speed up searching for specific combinable tabble in case there's a lot of tabbles linked to filtered files)

    3) DOUBLE CLICK on a window
I would like to use as many "mouse commands" as possible. For example double-click on background of main window or file panel isn't used. Double click can be used to switch
    - between "scroll" and "select" tool (in main window);
    - among "normal" , "orbital" and "gallery" view in file panel.
There's also possibility to use single "mouse wheel" or "CTRL + mouse wheel" for specific commands in file panel.

    4) MINIMIZED FILE PANELS on main window
Sometimes it's a bit mess on my task bar (or object dock task bar) if there are a lot of opened file panels. It would be very nice if there was a possibility to minimize these panels somewhere on main window in form of list or "cloud" containing opened tabbles.

    5) Customizable "BASKETS" of Tabbles in main window in order to arrange them and sort them (like STARDOCK FENCES used on desktop)

+ one more) MOVING and COPYING of files to:
    - folders in file panel
    - or to folder-tabbles in main window
    (throught drag&drop)

    MetaData & Tagging

    Postby Starz » Sun Feb 28, 2010 12:06 pm

I'm a new user and poster... so if this is already in the product...sorry.

1)I'd really like to see the use of Metadata to help tag or suggest tagging. By having an option that will pull Metadata out of files and populate the tag list (or maybe a subset metatabble list :) ) would really move this into the personal DMS space. So far so good though...

    2) Put links to Tabbles and Tabbles Support in the Help menu

I reserve the right to make 3 more of these

    1) we know my friend, we know... this is also on the to-do list... but not so high though

    2) well, there is something already... but good hint, I'm noting this down :D

Looking forward for the next 3

    1. Single click Tabbles (I normally use single click windows explorer)

    2. Del key deletes things (rather then having to go to the Delete button in the menu)

    3. Undo feature

    4. Be able to apply subtraction automatically on certain extensions (i.e. temp files)

    5. Create a more complete standard of tables for extensions.

    (For example:
mp3, mod, mid, wav, wma, ogg, mp4a should all be assigned an AUDIO/MUSIC tabble,
avi, ogm, mkv, wmv, mp4, mov, etc should all be assigned to VIDEO tabble
Common Microsoft docs should all be assigned to DOCUMENT tabble)

I know some users will want to create their own or alter the defaults but i find it frustrating to have to create these.

MANY MORE features desired as I will testing TABBLES pretty extensively to see if it would benefit non-power users.
Many of the users I support need all the help they can get just to find the file they saved recently.
I've spent hours with them showing them how to use folders but still they lose track of their precious files.

    Hello there!

Thanks for your message and welcome to the forum! :)
FYI, we're giving the GUI a low priority now as we're working on a client-server version of Tabbles allowing the users to share their tagging in intranet, like a real DMS (cool, isn't it?) :-)
Let me go through your post:

bwiersig wrote:1. Single click Tabbles (I normally use single click windows explorer)

Uh... maybe an option to do that? This sounds an extremely power-user feature anyway... can't you configure your mouse to do that automatically instead?

bwiersig wrote:2. Del key deletes things (rather then having to go to the Delete button in the menu)

yes... this is on our to-do list

    bwiersig wrote:3. Undo feature

yes... this is also on our to-do list

bwiersig wrote:4. Be able to apply subtraction automatically on certain extensions (i.e. temp files)

Uh, first time we hear this too... :O
There is a (partial) workaround for this already: when you create an auto-tagging rule (which is the best way to use Tabbles) you can tell Tabbles "not to tag the file/folder" if the name contains a certain word". You could use this to exclude the folders that contain the name "temp". To create such rule go to Options > Auto-tagging rules > New.

bwiersig wrote:5. Create a more complete standard of tables for extensions.

mp3, mod, mid, wav, wma, ogg, mp4a should all be assigned an AUDIO/MUSIC tabble,

Very interesting stuff here - listen up to this: the business version of Tabbles includes the functions Export database structure and Replace database structure (they are under File > Tabbles' database). Those two functions do respectively export and import the skeleton of the db along with the rules, not including any of the data (the files, folders and urls). This means that you can create a set of rules for all the file types/names you want, then export it into an small xml file, pass it to to other people who can import it and have all those rules into their Tabbles database. More precisely the export db function does export the tabbles, the color groups and the rules.

    Why did we do this?
    - cause different people have different needs: imagine people editing videos or photographers, they'd need auto-tagging with file types and patterns that could only annoy a lawyer or a journalist.
    - cause we had people like you in mind: we're aware that creating complex rules is a time-consuming and it's a power-user kind of feature, therefore we figured that an IT expert could it once and send it over to all of his customers/colleagues.
    Smart, isn't it? :ugeek:

This feature is also enabled in the free version, so you could test-drive it and see what it can do for you with spending a penny on it.

(btw, if we're talking about large numbers, we could even automate this process...meaning that your customers would automatically get a certain default database...)

We'd love to hear more about the people you support. This file-management issue is exactly the reason why we created Tabbles in the first place. I could also point you to a couple of happy reviews we got recently from real users (i.e. not people we paid or we pointed a gun to in order to write a review... :D ), respectively a photographer and a translator. It would also be interesting for us to know if the client-server feature could be interesting for your users... Please pm me and maybe we can talk via phone/skype?

    Thanks,

Welcome aboard! I think I see where you're going here, and taking Andrea's response in mind; I don't know the makeup of the folks you support, but from years in computer repair and having elderly parents using Tabbles also, many of the ideas here would certainly be a benefit to the older set.

bwiersig wrote:1. Single click Tabbles (I normally use single click windows explorer)

I think Andrea's correct here that an option is the answer. I also think it's a damn good idea that better get on the to-do list. That said, the left-side tree is a single-clicker and may help in the interim.

bwiersig wrote: 4. Be able to apply subtraction automatically on certain extensions (i.e. temp files)

The first time I read this I thought "Saved combines!". Like bookmarks. An over-reading of it, to be sure, but a nice idea that I hope is on the todo list. Andrea's correct tho that the rules panel should be able to cover that for you.

You can build the rules yourself, but yes, one rule per filetype. A pain in the butt and I would be sure to miss one.

This brings up 2 things I can see; OR functionality in the rules panel (mp4 OR mov > Video tabble. Could have 1 rule instead of bunches, perhaps), and importing structures.

We could build a structure with a rule set that assigned extension to the generic tabbles and that would be a great thing to use to create a Tabbles database, but it doesn't help if you want to apply it to an existing db... The weakness with the way structures are handled is that importing replaces the structure in toto and clears the database. (a bad thing if you didnt backup the db...) The ability to append the rules/structure into an existing db would be incredibly useful.

Before I go wandering off into the weeds. Nice ideas and I think this general idea should be pursued mightily.

    Quickly wanted to outline something this brought to mind regarding structures and dbs. I seem to recall an old thread touching on this but it's late... Anyways;

The ability to replace (how it currently works) or append structures and dbs. Basically you get the option to append/import rules, tabbles, and files in the case of dbs. Before anything is imported/appended/replaced a "Save db?" box pops. (box could be added now as there is no reminder warning you could be clearing your db...)
