I was wondering about this... I had been seeing files that I was -sure- I'd tabbled some time ago showing only the ruled tabbles. Last night I started looking around and found that several hundred files in my primary db appeared to have lost tabbles...! Have been in the process of trying to convince myself it was a result of the problems I had with the rules corruptions Maurizio fixed for me recently. (file dates and db didn't hold it up, but whatever...)

I can't imagine why. Did the files loose all their tabbles, or just some? Is it possible you have moved the files with Explorer? Is it possible you have restored an old db by mistake where those files were not yet tagged?

They had ruled tabbles, nothing more. Is it possible that I restored an old db by mistake? Possible but not likely as the pol dbs are save dated in the filename and they're not subjects in testing. Since I add a few tabbles a session it would be obvious real quickly if I had to create them again. In any event, if the filename of the loaded DB were displayed in the main Tabbles window's title bar we could all be a little more certain about which db we have loaded...

Knowing now that movement of large numbers of files caused the issue makes me think that an organization update was the main perpetrator and my sync program was/is an accomplice. Occasionally I will add new sub-folders when I start to accumulate a number of things that have a common thread - cleans out the base dir (and now I can add a rule to it :) ). Syncing between the thumb drive and the main dir also generally touches alot of files; moving, renaming, and overwriting.

However it goes, something happened and it's done - onward into the fog...

BTW, I'm getting some -serious- lag time when I create a tabble in the quick-tag window. Average is upwards of 30 seconds or more during which all the windows (including the pop-ups) will show (if you click on them) as 'not responding'. It looks like it's lagging while it is creating the tabble and placing/drawing it in the main window. (There is an associated spike in CPU use fwiw) I wouldn't think this was a video issue as I run a Geforce with 1G ram on board. (Everquest likes alot of vid ram... ) I have a couple hundred tabbles showing in the main window and haven't hidden a bunch to see if that would cut down lag. Let me know if there's any test or such I can run to nail down the issue.

A couple hundred tabbles visible in the main window? That's many. Could you tell me if the lag also occurs when you have few (say 20) tabbles visible? (To test this, backup the db, select all tabbles but 20, right-click > properties > hide from main window. Bring the quick dialog with ALT+C, create a tabble on the fly.)

Created a derivative db to do this, and yes, lag is little more than a slight hiccup, pretty much gone. (via alt-a > ctrl-n) Slowdown occurring when Tabbles is trying to decide where to place the new tabble? Noticed that there appear to be some 'rules' where new tabbles are put...

another little update, our to-do lists:

    Maurizio:
AI to intercept the files lost while moving. Basically we thought of a pretty simple system that should solve the problem of tags getting lost when files are moved.
Additional list-like UI in the main window: many people asked for this and it makes indeed sense. We don't want to scare off people who are used to Outlook
Nag-screen: ok, this is more or less an official announcement - we're moving to the current trialware (30 days trial) to a Winzip like model, a nag-screen will start popping up after the user has categorized some 3000 files (and doesn't have a license!). This is a first step to making a version free for personal use and some more advanced ones with more features (which we don't have yet).

    Andrea
Training videos: I was supposed to start today but since we decided to add this list-like GUI for the main window, we thought I'd rather wait until this is done.
Flash little video for the home page: do you remember that? Was it cool or crap? Should I update it? Else, any suggestion?
Revitalize the wiki: yes, I know I should do something about it... but I don't think I should put that on top of my list...anyway, you all can play with the wiki yourselves you can login with your forum accounts... :)

    That's all folk!

Last minute update: Maurizio is working on not-ZUI mode for the main window (the zoom is locked and the window can be scrolled only vertically), we think to post a beta of this tonight on the forum :-)

A bit off-topic, but I just finished writing this:

    Tabbles Museum

Anyone out there, please post it, stumble-it, share it... any sort of thing really appreciated!

(Shit it's 3.40 am here... I guess I should get some sleep!)

Slowdown occurring when Tabbles is trying to decide where to place the new tabble? Noticed that there appear to be some 'rules' where new tabbles are put.

I haven't had time to check yet...

    Hi!

Have you considered replacing the "Start" tab in Windows XP? Or, less aggressively replacing Windows/Start/All Programs with a program launcher "Tabbles" icon?

In addition, by fully implementing the experimental desktop replacement you would be able to incorporate both "My Computer" and the desktop into Tabbles making it "the" primary driver of the Windows XP application (haven't used Windows 7 so I don't if this approach has any long term shelf life).

    Below are some management suggestions...

    1. Add to the "save" and "save as" the option of sending a file to Tabbles and tag.
    2. Add a PDF print driver that would allow the user to, at the time of printing to PDF, print the file to Tabbles and tag.
    3. Similar to 1 & 2 above scan to Tabbles and tag.

Thanks for the opportunity of making suggestions.

    TEASER

    - The arrows are gone: welcome to the scrollbar! (they're still ugly, but we're working on them) :D
    - There is a new member of the family: the microtabble (it's there to quickly tell you how many tabbles are linked to that file

    Hello world,

guys, it's taking a bit longer than expected: Maurizio has his hands deep in the "rules" engine and is basically re-writing most of it and fixing a loooot of stuff more :-)

Plus, we're working a bit on the graphics, we want to make it look really cute :)

Stay tuned, it won't take too long until the next beta (1.3.11RC or something? we're going crazy with the numbers...) :ugeek:

Looking forward to the scroll bar, for certain! Norbert? I guess if the scroll bar doesn't mind the name then neither should I... :)

I'd say give it at least 1.3.2, sounds like you guys are packing quite a few new things into the next release! Honestly though, I'd consider calling it a beta rather than an rc until we've run it through the mill a bit and Maurizio and you have had a chance to run down any oddities in the new code. Between the scroll bar, micro tabble, and work in the rules engine it sounds like there will be a lot of new code... (never comfortable going direct to RC. Over here in Microsoftville they even release alphas as well as an occasional gamma... and we know the difference... )
