    Database location

    Postby KaptK » Tue Jun 29, 2010 5:32 pm

I noticed you have the database stored in Documents\user\Tabbles\Databases location.

Would it be possible to change this to having it within the main program directory so you can make backups more easily of the program and database? Would running the portable version solve this for me?

    yes, it's possible:

    from the menu:

file > Tabbles' database > change database path.

Would running the portable version solve this for me?

No, it would be more difficult. Support for changing db location in the portable version has only been activated recently and is still experimental.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry it took so long for me to respond.

I see this has been moved into the shared folders as the option is gone for the File menu now. Time to go off and test shared folders for you now :)

Can you still do this? I don't see this menu item anymore in 1.5.12.

    molson,
we removed this functionality as you can do nearly the same thing using the tabble sharing.

Why do you need this anyway?

Why do you need this anyway?

Because one prefers to share its database "offline"? Without storing data over a network connection? Because one bought two licences to be able to use one and the same database on two systems - synchronising the database-file from a user-definable folder to a portable usb-stick and back to the other system?

I updated my tabbles yesterday - with the option to change the database path being gone (file > Tabbles' database > change database path.), the usability has fallen to a huge degree...

To sum it up... what about re-enbling the function to select where one would want to store the database file?

    Thanx in advance

    Hi there,

the reason why we removed this is that we want you to be able to achieve the exact same result using the tabble sharing feature. Actually I've just to activate tabble sharing on Tabbles Portable and indeed it doesn't work... the reason is that we didn't foresee such a setup...

So: could you please tell us more about your setup so that we can see if I can accomodate it for you? We need to know:
    1) how many Tabbles you have and what licenses
    2) where are the data stored (what disk/s)
    3) where did you use to keep the database

Anyway: right now (just tried it) if you're using a Tabbles home and a Tabbles portable, you can do the following:
    1) setup tabble sharing on Tabbles home: define a folder where Tabbles would share the whole database (help here). Tabbles home will do nothing else then create a copy of your db, in the folder you chose, giving it a funny name.
    2) rename to "db.zip" and copy (you can use a program for this...) the exported database in your Tabbles portable Databases folder.
    3) fire up Tabbles portable... voilà.

But let's see if we can find a solution for you? :)

    Best regards,

    Andrea

    Hi there,

right now my setup consists (or "MUST" consist) of the following environment:

I am a student working with a lot different material mostly on two main systems a have stored in two different places:
    - My local pc at home
    - my student's pc at my university

For both systems I have bought an individual licence of tabbles.

To keep track of the current files AND file-status/-tags (=tabbles) I synchronize my main-folder via USB-harddisk between both systems. The main folder has different sub folders with the files AND one folder with the Tabbles database.

Scenario: I work from home, update some files, update something in the tabblesDB.. then I sync the files to the USB-disk, go to university, sync everyhing back and have my current status updated on the university pc. Then I continue to work here, sync the main-directory back, go home and again sync everything in my home-pc and have the current status at home again. That's works perfect with the option to configure the database-path manually.

I neither can't sync my files in that way nor store the database (due to filesystem permissions) when I can't change the path of the database.
In addition, I have no internet connection available at the student's pc anymore.

Right now I have to continue using version 1.5.4 as this is the last(?) version where I could put in the path of the database manually - a feature I really can't miss.

I see the issue now... right now I'd say you should stick to the 1.5.4 (you're not really missing much as we're only working on tabbles sharing right now, since you don't use it, than it's ok like this I guess). But let's see if we can find a solution to your problem... I'll be in touch.

Apologies for the situation... the reason for this is that we couldn't foresee someone having your setup...

    Thanks,

    A.
